Chapter 10 - All A Dream?

Percy (Age 6)

January 19th, 2286

Time: 10:32

“It’s barely been a month, and you’ve already broken it?” Doctor Rose growled at me as Mr. Xan sat me down on the cold metal table in the middle of the room.

“It wasn’t his fault!” Mr. Xan barked back. “You want to be pissed off? Go take it up with the little shit that pulled him off the top of the jungle gym!”

“I’m not going to keep replacing these if it is going to keep breaking them because it picks fights with the other pups!”

“I-I d-didn’t!” I tried to sound angry like Mr. Xan. “Kevin started it, and he hurt me because I won!”

“You want me to believe that a wolf picked a fight with you and then lost?” Doctor Rose laughed, but it also sounded like a dog’s bark at the same time. “Why would any wolf bother with you?”

“He…” Kevin’s words started to play in my head. “H-he s-s-said…”

Before the first tears even started to fall, Mr. Xan had picked me back up and buried my face in his shirt as he rubbed the top of my head. “Percy didn’t start anything, and it certainly isn’t his fault that the prosthetic broke. You obviously don’t want us to be here, so just replace the arm, and we’ll leave. Then I’ll work on getting Percy and myself a new doctor, so you won’t ever have to see us again!”

“Don’t…” Doctor Rose’s voice was really shaky. “It’ll take me a week to have a new one ready. The best I can do right now is take the broken one off.”

Mr. Xan pressed his cold, wet nose in my hair as he sat me back down on the table and pulled away from me. I tried to hold onto him, but he put his paws on my shoulders and pushed back. Mr. Xan wasn’t growling anymore, but he didn’t sound happy either “If that is the best you can do, then I guess that is fine. I’d rather him not have to lug around that dead weight. Is there no way you can get the new arm sooner?”

“No. It takes a day for the printer to make the shell.” Another set of paws touched my right shoulder, and it sounded like Doctor Rose was talking right in my ear. “Then I have to send it off to have the electronics installed in it. After that, it is tested to make sure everything is working correctly. If I get it back by Friday, I’ll come in on Saturday to do all of the tests, and we can install it then. But that is the best I can do, and only if the mechanics get it back to me early.”

“Thank you,” Mr. Xan replied.

“T-Thank you,” I sniffled out as well.

“You’re welcome.” The doctor’s voice was much softer that time. It sounded like he cared. Then with a click, my right shoulder got lighter. “There you go. I’ll call you when I get the new arm back.
